This? Is Awesome.
Nov. 20th, 2010 03:32 pmI know other people have posted this, but I just read it and it made me smile and lifted my mood.
Anti-Bullying Starts in the First Grade. You should read the comments sent in from people. Just. Yeah. Geek girls are awesome!
Also, I have a question for all the Kindle users out there. Do you think that you read faster or slower with a Kindle? Have any of your reading habits changed? Most of all, do you recommend them? I may have to do a lot of commuting in the near future, so...
And, anyone else excited about Yuletide assignments? *bounces*
Have a good weekend!

Date: 2010-11-20 05:06 pm (UTC)I read at the same speed, which is lightning-fast! I love my ebook reader and I wouldn't be without it.

Date: 2010-11-20 05:26 pm (UTC)While I am vehemently anti-DRM, and the books you buy from Amazon are DRMd to the Kindle, I find I don't mind too much.
For one thing, you can use the Kindle software on pretty much every kind of digital machine you could think of (even Linux, because Wine will take the first version of the Windows software).
Sure, there will always be books you want in hard copy, so you can admire them on your shelf or loan them to friends. But for the books where it's not that important to have a hard copy, the Kindle saves money and shelfspace.
But the thing that I love most about the Kindle is the stuff you can put on it that you don't buy from Amazon. This includes fanfic -- the Kindle reads text nicely and if you want to get fancy you can convert anything you want to read to mobi format. There's also Project Guttenberg, where you can get public domain works for free. If you have a scanner that converts to OCR PDF then you can go crazy with your own documents, magazines and books. Yes, I've cut the binding off a few to store electronically.
Do I read faster? About the same. I've found that the technology goes away after just a few minutes of reading and you're immersed in the book just like you would be with a hard copy.
My Mom borrowed mine and noted that she got a bit of a stiff neck when using it because you're not moving your head or hands as much as when you read an actual book. I haven't really noticed it, and I have a bad neck, but YMMV.
In all, I do recommend it especially if you're inclined to use some of the extra capabilities. I mostly do my reading when I travel and this makes it a cinch since I don't have to carry around heavy books.

Date: 2010-11-20 05:59 pm (UTC)You can also download books from various sources, with torrents and the like, from some really awesome community websites, if you're looking for something different than what's on the Kindle store. There's a program called Calibre that can transfer the format of pretty much anything to .mobi so it's readable on the Kindle. It's also awesome to have a backup of your Kindle library on your computer with Calibre.
I've found that I DO read a lot faster now. I do this challenge thing with my husband where we try to read 75 books in a year and the first one there 'wins.' I've been reading way faster since I got my Kindle than I was in previous years.
Sorry for writing a book, I just really love my Kindle!
