seren_ccd: (In Plain Sight - Marshall cannot outrun)
Seriously, I'm not sure what's up with me lately, but when I set out to do a thing - I end up REALLY DOING A THING.

Examples:

1. We went to look at a flat on a Friday. We signed the lease on Monday and moved in the following Saturday aka four days ago. So...I'm in a new flat? Yay?

No, it's good. It's a huge flat. Two bedrooms and in a very bizarre layout and well within our price range. It, unfortunately, as we've since discovered, has one of those metal plates above what I presume was the old-fashioned way of getting into the cellar and this plate is located on the pavement JUST beneath the window for the front room. So cue a big CLANK every time someone walks on it. Which is a lot. However, you can't hear it in the bedroom, so that's nice.

2. I'm still working on my two original novels and making progress. But, I'm also writing three fics. *facepalm* I think I'm just throwing stuff out there and seeing what happens. I'll finish them! I will. I just, ugh, so many projects.

3. My job! Holy crap. I was asked a few months back if I minded doing stuff in the lab, to which I replied, 'No, of course not! It's fun!' Cue the last three weeks of me being in the lab doing experiment after experiment, writing down the data, interpreting the data, and setting up new experiments. WHAT?! How did this even happen? I'm even showing the new PhD student how to do all this. I'm a lab manager! ME! WHAT?!

4. And finally - I'm baking this cake this weekend because if you're going to bake a cake, why not bake a three-layer chocolate marzipan cake with pistachios: Pistachio Petit Four Cake .

Possibly as result of all the above, my period came very early and I took today off because of my abdomen yelling at me rather loudly. Imma go make some tea.

Happy Wednesday? ♥

Things I'm Watching, Reading and Writing Wednesday!

Watching: RE: The new Star Wars trailer - I'm going to go on record and say that I do NOT trust JJ Abrams with the new Star Wars movie further than I can throw him. I am approaching the whole thing with extreme caution and very tempered enthusiasm. I am STILL not over the travesty that was the most recent Star Trek movie. That being said, John Boyega is amazing and I hope he gets everything that is good in the world.

I'm still with From Dusk till Dawn and am actually a bit anxious about the season finale coming up.

I haven't watched the latest Lewis, but I will!

I think I'm taking me, myself and I to see Crimson Peak week after next when it finally gets to town. No one else is all that interested, although sis-in-law might be up for it, provided lil nephew lets her take the evening off. (My little nephew is the cutest thing! He's smiling now and he loves watching Auntie Seren make jazz hands above his head.)

Reading: I just re-read Maybe This Time by Jenny Crusie because it has ghosts in it and I'm trying to figure out how to actually write a novel-length story. The longest thing I've ever written was my Avengers are the A-Team Big Bang which clocked in at about 50,800 words. I'm up to 40,000 or so on the novel thing, which is probably okay? I still have a fair amount to write, I just feel like I'm missing something. Ah well, that's what editing is for.

Writing: The ghost story is still ongoing. I've run into a bit of a problem in that I'm not sure how to get from Point B to Point C. I've gotten from Point A to Point B, but the next bit is giving me issues. I may just skip it for now and write Point C and come back to the muddy bit.

How is everyone? Happy Wednesday! ♥
seren_ccd: (pic#)
Reading: I just purchased Sorceror to the Crown by Zen Cho because I was told it was like Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell with lots of ladies and POC and magic! I haven't started it yet, but it'll be cracked open by the weekend.

I'm debating re-reading the Rivers of London series before the next book is released, but that may be optimistic of me.

I did just re-read Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman because the prose is lovely and I'm trying to improve my prose.

Watching: I am actually still keeping up with From Dusk Till Dawn. It has these moments that are really, really, really good. The dialogue is crisp and the acting is just plain fun. But then it goes a bit wonky and I just wonder if they just throw stuff in there because they think they have to. But the ladies are interesting and the mythology is kinda fun. Plus Esai Morales is having a blast being an awful, awful, AWFUL dude. Seriously, I'd only watch Esai Morales do what this dude's doing. No one else.

Lewis started up last night and it was quite good, I thought! Just how I like it: Robbie, Laura, James and Lizzie teasing each other while solving crime. Bring it!

Writing: The novel continues! I've written a grand total of nine chapters, maybe ten? A good bit of it is handwritten at present and my goal is to type all of that lot up by the weekend, so I can start fresh with the middle bit on Monday. But I have the first third or so done? I think? It feels like I do and it feels pretty darn great, to be honest. I may actually finish this thing! No one is more surprised than I am.

How is everyone? Happy Wednesday! ♥

1. I have a cold! Woooo - *ach-gasp-cough* - ooo? Typical. But I feel better than I did yesterday, so that's something. I may trundle off to the pharmacy later this week and get a flu shot. Just in case.

2. The job search goes ever onwards. *sighs*

3. Writing hit a bit of a wall, simply due to not feeling well. But I'm almost done with the revision of the first six chapters, which means I can write NEW STUFF now. I have several fun scenes in mind. *bounces*

4. I've been thinking about my main character and I'm now seeing Norah Jones as 'Nora'. I'm not sure why. I adore Hayley Atwell but I'm now seeing someone else in my mind. We'll see how that plays out. Probably because I keep imagining Chappi Korsandi as her mum.

5. Here is a very wee snippet from the original thing. Ghosts? Really? )

Happy Wednesday! ♥
seren_ccd: (Writing is hard - Daisy from Spaced)
*Because if I have to have Bonnie Tyler in my head all day - so do y'all!

So, I stayed home from work yesterday because I have a cold and my throat is not a happy bunny. I actually managed to work on three different stories. My Hobbit WIP, my original novel, AND my Het Big Bang that I am most definitely writing because I have no control over my life. (I wrote over 1000 words of it yesterday and I have an outline, I just need to decide what era it's taking place in. I'm thinking post-WWII because why not?)

I should be sick more often is what I'm getting at.

My Het Big Bang, by the way, is Hobbit!AU!All-human. Thorin Oakenshield needs a spirit medium to eradicate his manor of ghosts. Luckily, Gandalf knows of a lady in the Shire who might be able to help. I'm going to go spooky with this one. *flails* So excited to work on this!

I also re-watched some Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries because they're brilliant. Season Three starts soon! Eeeeee!

How is everyone?

Happy Wednesday! ♥

What I'm up to Wednesdays!

Let's see if having a specific posting day with specific updates helps me stay in touch!

What I'm up to:

I went to London on the weekend to see my sis-in-law who is pregnant! Yay! I cannot WAIT to be an auntie. This kid is going to have their reading lists SET by the time they appear. ;D Le husband will handle all the fun science experiments.

But we went to the Southbank and wandered around the Tate Modern. They had a really fun textile exhibit and I really enjoyed it. Some really cool paintings that incorporated twine and ribbons actually woven into the canvas.

Then we headed to a restaurant and le husband and sis-in-law had massive plates of ribs. I had fish as I'm not a ribs person. We then had peanut butter and jelly cheesecake and oh. my. god. This was the BEST cheesecake I have ever had. I'm not kidding. It was light and sweet and arhmmkhjhdas. *Homer Simpson impression* All in all a good day out.

Work-wise - They've ordered MS Project Professional for me, so I get to learn how to use that soon!

What I'm reading:

Just finished: The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande (my write-up is on [livejournal.com profile] l0ve0freading) and Whispers Underground and Broken Homes by Ben Aaronovitch (yes, I know, I devoured them, they're so good).

In the midst of: Bicycle Diaries by David Byrne (the Talking Heads guy) and Say Yes to the Marquess by Tessa Dare. I'm loving both of them!

What I'm writing:

Here is the very latest section I've written for The Ghost and the Ghost Writer. I'm experimenting with POV and trying out first person and to be honest, I've rejigged the whole thing and I've started over (almost) completely.

Happy Wednesday! ♥

Okay. Everyone really, really, REALLY needs to watch Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

Female lead who has flaws as well as being fantastic? Check!
Pretty decent secondary female characters with flaws and interesting characters? Check.
A truly yummy detective inspector (the actor used to be a professional cyclist, hellooo broad shoulders)? Check.
Set in 1920s Australia? Check.

Basically, I need everyone to watch this and then write stuff about how brilliant it is.

In other news, I wrote 750 words of my Yuletide fic today! Whoo boy, this thing is going to be long. Eek.

ALSO!!!! Looking to do something low-key during the month of November while still making sure to write every day! [livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu to the rescue! The only requirement is that you write for 10 minutes every day. It's brilliant. Come and be miserable with us!

Happy Wednesday!
seren_ccd: (Default)
What? I can't help it. I love these characters. A lot. I'm not even sorry. They're my chance to write a Mary Stewart-esque story. They make me flail. I need some flailing in my life. It's been really stressful and icky and just plain AAAAARGH lately and these two have made me a little giddy. So...there.

*facepalm*

How is everyone? Ooh! It's Wednesday! Instead of pics, have some awesome 80s music brought to you by The Cult. 'Cause I'm in that kind of mood. Enjoy the hair and the clothes.

I have a proposal for the United Kingdom. I propose we are allocated four (4) Good Weather Days per year. These days are to be used when the weather is unusually lovely and sunny. Not unlike Snow Days, except for when the weather is pleasant instead of unpleasant.

We are allowed to take one of these days at our leisure.

What say you?*

*Sponsored by the fact that for the first time in months, the sun was shining and it felt fantastic outside. I did open a window in the office and that helped a little bit.

(I’m conveniently ignoring the bureaucratic nightmare that would ensue should this policy be taken into effect.)

In other news: I love my friends-list. All of your advice yesterday was very, very helpful. ♥

I’m thinking I may sign up for the min-bang if that’s offered. As [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait said, it’s not like my one-shots don’t end up well over 10,000 words. Plus I end up having a bit more time in the summer – or at least it feels like I do.

So, yes – Steve and Darcy are going on a road trip and there will probably be at least one really big shark. In fact, it’s tentatively titled: Five times an outing with Steve and Darcy resembled a bad SyFy film.

However, it is also Wednesday and I’m still plugging away at the original thing. So, here are some pics of all the kickass ladies in this thing: trust me, it calls for it )

Happy Wednesday!
seren_ccd: (In Plain Sight - Marshall cannot outrun)
Welp.

I managed to walk all the way to my office yesterday morning, and got up the lift to my desk before I realised that I had left my backpack at home. Meaning no keys, no wallet, nothing. *FACE. PALM.*

So I walked back and my husband met me partway with it before catching his bus. We came very close to saying ‘Heck with responsibilities – let’s catch the next train up to Edinburgh for the day!’ VERY. CLOSE.

I would like to make a motion for February to be stricken from the calendar as a month in which we attempt to do things. I move that we hibernate for the full 28 days.

Is the motion seconded?

It’s Wednesday so: picture time!

However, instead of pretty people, I bring pretty places. These are of Llanberis, which is a lovely little town in North Wales right smack at the base of Mt Snowden. It’s really tucked away in a little valley, but the Atlantic is only a few miles away. On a clear day, you can see it! I visited it once with my dad, actually when he came for a visit to the UK. It’s very small, and filled with B&Bs and hiking shops and a really, really yummy vegetarian café. Seriously, the fruit crumble with custard was a revelation.

So, this is the setting for my story. A valley with a quarry, disused slate mines, in the mountains and not too far from the sea. You either have to drive or take the bus from Bangor in order to get there. I highly recommend a visit!

Happy Wednesday! ♥

*Does anyone remember Chris Kattan in Saturday Night Live? Anyone? Bueller? He was funny is my point. And had flair. His Mango sketch never fails to make me snicker – because I’m 12.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Is it just me, or does everyone wake up on a Wednesday and go 'Well, at least I've only got to do that two more times before the weekend.'

The plan for this weekend is write, write, write. And then write some more. I have four stories that I would like to write. At least two of them should be finished by the end of this month, at the very least.

Anyway!

The Cast List for Teeth, Claws and Guinness is growing. BUT, I've figured out the bad guy. Yay!

Back at work. Spent all morning getting large packets of stuff ready for posting. My paper-cut fingers are not happy.

Ans why is it that everytime I go outside I get poured on? I mean, drenched. Not nice, universe. Not nice at all.

Seeing as it's Wednesday, it's picture and Teeth, Claws and Guinness snippet time. Woohoo!

Happy Wednesday!

It sort of occurred to me today that I am actually going on holiday next week. As in properly getting on a plane and flying across an ocean.

THIS TRULY FILLS ME WITH DELIGHT.

Work has been so unbelievably boring. I honestly think my boss has conversations with me in her HEAD and so when she asks if I've done said thing and I say, 'Ummm, no?' she's all, 'Hmmm, did I not actually SPEAK THE WORDS TO YOU?' *head desk*

I get to see my mom and my dog and my dad and my husband's family and, yeah. Ooh! I'm also buying a new laptop! I just want to hang out with my dog and drink sweet iced tea and eat Mexican food and fried catfish and hushpuppies. I'm also trying to see if anyone is up for canoeing.

Also, the little back story I was going to write about Hannah's family in the Teeth, Claws and Guinness world is reaching epic proportions and probably won't see the light of day this week. Crikey. Why so wordy, brain?

Have some pictures and snippets instead!

Evan and Hannah and Don and Gwendi )

Is it wrong that the main reason I want to get a new laptop is to eventually get Photoshop so I can learn how to make graphics and icons for my personal stories?

Things making me happy.

1. It's not raining.
2. I'm actually writing Big Bang and it isn't painful.
3. It's Wednesday!
4. I'm making spaghetti and meatballs for dinner tonight with some amazing looking meatballs I got from our fabulous butcher.
5. I met the most lovely black and white Great Dane today outside said butcher's. I'm five foot one and this guy's head came to my chest. Gorgeous!
6. Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, and Ralph Fiennes are going to be in a film version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. My life is complete. I adore the one with Alec Guinness.

Happy Wednesday!

ETA. Spock has just started gossiping in my story. WTF? I hadn't really planned on him doing that. Silly Vulcan.

Who's got two thumbs, is supposed to go to London this weekend for a wedding, and has the beginnings of a cold which includes throbbing temples, an unhappy nose and can't seem to find a comfortable temperature to exist in?

This girl.

Ow.

Soooo making amazing restorative chicken soup with massive amounts of garlic tonight. I have no money whatsoever, but I was really looking forward to going to London this weekend.

And it's Wednesday! So, not being one to break tradition, have some pictures!

So, who had to go to the Royal Welsh Show yesterday, stand in a marquee for eight hours straight, in the pouring rain and mud?

Yeah. Miserable day.

The shining point was when I finally got to go get lunch (at 3 pm!) I wandered past one of the show arenas where, I kid you not, the Dancing JCB's were, well dancing, to the theme from The Terminator. For a finale, they raised their shovels and sparks flew out. It was pretty fantastic.

However, my feet still feel wet.

So, Oxoniensis' Porn Battle is underway. Is it totally missing the point if I want to write my own prompt?

And since it's Wednesday and the rain hasn't stopped and I'm so making a huge pot of garlic chicken soup when I get home, have some pretty pictures.

but i just can't be with you like this anymore, alejandro )
