Dani never thought she'd have a day where she could honest-to-god smile about drug addiction, but staring up and Charlie and his amused-bordered-with-intent smile, she feels safe and relaxed, and in control.

Oh, Dani. Oh SHOW. Perfect.

You know what I always loved about this show (and it's probably mostly a credit to Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi's acting) was how these two characters were so good at having one face that was definitely their 'mask', what they wanted people to see and what they wanted people to believe. But, then they could switch into who they really were so smoothly, like when Charlie becomes deadly serious or Dani relaxes and just smiles. They were so wonderfully dynamic and I have a hard time finding other characters who did that as well as they did.

I am convinced there was either an Awesome Writer or Awesome Production Assistant who ran around behind the scenes poking things and forcing continuity and encouraging Shahi and Lewis to develop and stick with their own headcanon for their characters because listening to the commentaries, IT WAS NOT THE PRODUCERS. AT ALL.

Because you're right! There's just something so incredibly thoughtful and GENUINE about the performances. But more than that, it's CONSISTENT. And the way Charlie and Dani just... UGH. I can't really explain it? It's like Charlie was dead-upfront honest with her from minute one, and Dani was upfront loyal to him from the word go, and neither of them proved unworthy of the other? Because that honesty/loyalty test probably got blown by EVERYONE ELSE (except Ted?), but they were both kind of stunned that they each passed each other's tests and... just kept doing it?

I just. Dani SO BADLY wanted someone to be worthy of sticking by. Someone worthy of her loyalty. And Charlie SO BADLY wanted someone who was honest with him and wasn't freaked out when he was honest back. To me, their ENTIRE RELATIONSHIP led up to both of them simultaneously (but apart) dismissing that the other one had betrayed them. THIS. FROM PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN HORRIBLY BETRAYED BY OTHERS FOR FOREVER. Just. My HEART.

And their faces. I am just. THIS SHOW. THIS SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

EXACTLY! Ugh. So time for a re-watch.

There was just so much acceptance and no judging (or at least no irrational judging) on both their parts. And the show never descended into melodrama or angst for the sake of it, which will throw me right out of a show in a heartbeat. UGH. Love it.
