This was terribly fun.

A most excellent meme taken from [livejournal.com profile] vega_ofthe_lyre

1. Ask and I'll assign you the basis of some show idea.
2. Create the characters you need, including the actors who'd play them. Photos optional but recommended.
3. Come up with a general synopsis of the premise.

[livejournal.com profile] vega_ofthe_lyre gave me 'A Small Library Staff and their Pet Dinosaur'

I give you: Please Don't Dog Ear the Books!

A small library located in the (fictional) village of Hafod-on-Wye is located near a small circle of standing stones. The new head librarian accidently activates a spell that causes books to come to life after midnight. He and his small staff must manage the havoc this inevitably causes and herd characters back into their respective novels or reference books.

And no one is ever exactly as they appear on the page.

You know how they say 'you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover'?

You probably shouldn't judge them by the characters either.

David Davies (played by Jack Davenport)

His aunt, Rosamund Davies has retired and insisted he replace her as head librarian. He is reluctant to move to such a provincial place, but says 'yes' seeing as the post is a step above his current position. He is a very fastidious, polite gentleman and has a hard time rolling with the punches. David tends to only believe it if he can see and touch it. Funnily enough, it's all his fault the standing stones activate and the books come to life. David spends a great deal of his time researching a way to counteract the spell.

This is not something he learned at Oxford.

But, he slowly comes to appreciate all the charming perks the town and the library has to offer. He has a very sophisticated girlfriend, Hesta, who still lives in London but begins to find himself enjoying the company of his quirky assistant librarian, Lenora.

Lenora Havers (played by Lenora Crichlow, I love her real name, so it's staying!)

Assistant librarian. She grew up in Hafod-on-Wye and has frequented the library since she was a little girl. Her only time away from the town was while she attended university in Edinbrough. Lenora loves books and believes there's nothing nicer than opening a new book and inhaling the smell. Her favorite pastime is reshelving while listening to 80s music.

She's also an aspiring writer and changes her chosen genre every month. She is overjoyed when the spell happens and has fun talking to the various characters that come through.

Lenora always says she's happy being single and that it keeps her totally free, but appears to be falling pretty hard for David. She's constantly trying to get him to loosen up. They spend many hours combing through old grimoires and spell books.

Rosamund Davies (played by Maggie Smith)

The former head librarian. She loves her nephew dearly and wants nothing more than to see him happy and fulfilled. She also loves her library and has a secret history tied up with it. She mostly stays at home, but will come in some early mornings to have a cuppa with Lenora and the other assistant, Mark.

Mark Hathaway (played by Johnny Galecki)

Assistant librarian. A nice, unassuming geek, who spends most of his time attempting to modernize the library. He is very slowly moving into the 21st century and keeps suggesting that if they made all the books electronic and get rid of the actual 'paper', they wouldn't have all these problems.

He does think the dinosaur is pretty cool.

Hesta Hughes (played by Joely Richardson)

David's girlfriend. She's a lawyer that still lives in London. She's honestly not the villain of the piece, she just doesn't really understand why David continues to want to live and work in Hafod-on-Wye. Hesta is very driven and extremely sophisticated. She is not a reader. At all. Therefore, she never has anything to say to Lenora and they tend to stand around in silence. David is rather oblivious.

Trevor Marcham (played by Dylan Moran, I really couldn't help myself!)

Lenora's friend. He owns a used bookstore in town and tends to accidently try to sell books he's borrowed from the library. He often comes in to grouse. He knows about the spell. He also has a slight crush on Lenora.

Merv the dinosaur

He now lives in the library after his book, Let's Learn About Dinosaurs came to life. He adores curling up in the kid's section on the carpet. Mark introduced him to digestive biscuits and now he won't go back into his book.

Min Reynolds (played by Jessica Hynes)

Owns the local coffeehouse/theatre/dance hall/wifi cafe/whatever she comes up with that week. Lenora's best friend and the object of Mark's quiet affection.

Marcus Gerrard (played by John Hannah)

The cheerful, understanding local pub owner who David becomes friends with and occasionally goes to for advice. It's entirely possible there is more to Marcus than his knowledge of good ales.

Archie Turner (played by Bill Nighy)

The local barrister who'd rather do Sudoku and chat with David about politics than practice law.

Stephen Markstone (played by Max Beesley)

Local developer. He's slowly buying up the land around the town to turn it into a bedroom community for the bigger cities. He'd love to get his hands on the library and refurbish it into a hotel/spa. Flirts with Lenora much to David's irritation.

Imagine the guest star possibilities!

I think I may have to write something for this.

Thank you! It was an awesome prompt. I've entertained the idea of writing about a bookshop/library for years now. I may just have to go for it! :D

Thank you! It was so much fun to think about. I had to put Dylan in. I spent the entire month of December rewatching Black Books to write my Yuletide fic, so he's been on my mind lately! And Lenora is just too lovely for words!

I was watching the repeats that were on the other day - the episode where Manny is mistaken for a real policeman and I could not breathe for laughing. The interrogation, the running. Fran blanking and of course Bernard's actions at the dinner party. Pure genius.

I also meant to ask for a show idea.

Oh, that is my favorite episode ever! Manny just slays me.

Hmmm....

A coffee shop owner who discovers that his or her mom or dad is actually a witch. GO!

Ok, this is a troublesome meme, because now I want to see this show! Since it doesn't exist outside of your fertile brain, though, I shall simply have to pray for heaps & heaps of fertilizer & plot bunnies for you! :D

Halfway through reading this I kind of forgot for a few seconds that it wasn't a real show, and I was so disappointed when I remembered! I would totally watch this. I want to hug it, I love it so much.
