Hi! Things!

1. I've been home sick with, at first, a UTI, and then a lovely reaction to the antibiotics. Seriously, I've never had a headache like the one I had yesterday in my life. I practically wrapped my pillow around my head to ease it. Today was filled with a long nap, lots of tea and water and the second season of Call the Midwife, because I love the fact that the ladies are front and center THE WHOLE TIME.

2. My Het Big Bang is making slow progress at the moment after my whirlwind of writing. BUT! It shall be done.

3. We are moving! Again! Back to Scotland! Yay?

Actually, it is Yay, we liked it up there and I think I can get a pretty good job. We've already found a decent flat for not very much in a good part of town. Hardwood floors and a view of the Firth of Tay. Although, I hate moving SO MUCH. Argh.

4. I have now seen Mad Max: Fury Road and Spy and I loved them both for pretty much the same reason. Women, front and center, being fantastic. Being badass and vulnerable and funny and, at the end of the day, taking no crap from anyone. Awesome and very entertaining. I mean, even if you aren't interested in anything apart from watching something entertaining - these two films are darn entertaining.

5. I just discovered that my local Tesco (boo, hiss!) has Libby's pumpkin in a can! *flails* I can never find this stuff over here. The amazing [livejournal.com profile] aj had to post me some once! They're probably SO overpriced, and I know it's summer, but I'm making pumpkin pie this weekend, I don't even care.

How is everyone? Staying cool?

Happy Thursday! ♥

Things! I…think I can manage five of them.

1. So looks like the plan is to move back to Scotland by the end of the summer. Which I am very okay with! I really am. But, dear GOD, do I hate moving and giving notice and all that stuff. I’m actually off to Scotland tomorrow for an interview on Friday for a job that I’d actually really like to get. We’ll see!

2. Writing on my Het BB progresses rather steadily! I’m roughly halfway through, I think. I’m trying to get the bulk of it done as soon as possible because if I’m going to be moving soon, that’s going to drain me of energy SO fast. But I’ve got two 8 hour train rides ahead of me (there and back), so hopefully I can get some writing in.

3. I really want to go see Spy because I have an adoration for Jason Statham that I refuse to feel shame over. It stems from the first Transporter movie where he coated himself with oil and fought ten bad guys. I laughed until I cried, no lie.

Oh, heck, only three things. I can’t think of another two. Ah well.

Happy Wednesday! ♥

Hullo!

Well. 2014 was hellacious. In fact, the less said about November and most of December the better. There were some health issues and it got pretty dodgy for awhile there. But I believe we're on the other side of things and I think things are in a much, much better place. I even went to the states for about 2 weeks to see my family and that was a blast. My mom got a puppy! Do you want to meet little Brynley the Shetland Sheepdog? He's just here, behind the cut: look at that faaace ) He's such a cutie-patootie. He's very smart and catches on very fast. *SQUISHES*

So, I have some 2015 Intentions (borrowed from Jenny Crusie's blog - as per usual- because 'resolutions' can come with a side order of guilt/shame if they aren't stuck to and I'm not in the mood for guilt/shame and I like having things that I'd like to accomplish, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't get around to them or don't quite finish them.

1. I'm doing Get Your Words Out again this year. I just fell short of the 150,000 goal last year by about 3,000 words, the majority of that was Walking Dead fic (a show that is now dead to me due to the fact that every time I write about a lady on that show - they die. I will never write a Carol fic, because she and Michonne are currently the best people on that show). ANYWAY! Words! I will attempt to write them! It's very slow-going at the moment but I will do my best.

2. Exercise. Le husband and I are going to try to go for a stroll every evening and my office-buddy and I belong to the gym that is right next door to our office, so we're going to try to go at least 3 times a week.

3. Take a holiday with le husband. We haven't had a holiday alone together in YEARS. I don't care if it's a long weekend in Brighton, we're taking periodic mini-breaks.

4. Continue to learn as much as I can at my job. It's looking like we'll be in the south of England until December 2015, so I'm going to take advantage of every single training opportunity I can. My supervisor wants to train me in project management and I am ALL FOR IT. I love it, I love my office, I love the work. I want to do as much of is as I can.

5. Pay off my credit card. I think I can do this by April. *fingers crossed*

6. Post more on LiveJournal. *NODS*

I'm actually also going on a holiday with my mom towards the end of the summer. She's coming over here with her church to tour cathedrals. The itinerary looks amazing! Private tours of Canterbury, Rochester, and Coventry cathedral AND Westminster Abbey AND we get to go to Oxford and Stonehenge!!! Very cool. The Episcopals are pretty chill, too. They like their pubs.

What about y'all? Any intentions or plans or fun stuff for the year? Heck, any fun plans for the weekend? Happy Friday! ♥

Things!

1. I made this apple cake yesterday and it is AMAZING. Very light and my arm is still numb from whisking the egg whites because I don't have a mixer, but it's lovely. I'm off to have my elevensies with it. The apples, btw, actually came from the orchard we currently live in. Hee!

2. Yuletide! I nominated the following for Yuletide.

The Moon-Spinners (film) - I don't know why I keep nominating this, but there you go.
An Inquiry into Love and Death (Simone St James)
The Murray-O'Keefe Families (Madeleine L'Engle)

I'll probably offer for them, too. Plus maybe Aliens, because that might be a fun challenge.

3. I had fun last week chatting about random topics, so if you want to throw some stuff at me, go for it!

Happy Sunday! ♥

Things!

1.I’ve had a minor brainwave on my original story and I’m slightly terrified that I may need to start from the beginning. I might just go for it and start over again and see what happens. I can still use a lot of what I’ve written, but I need to change the tone of my heroine because I FINALLY found a voice that is sticking.

2. I actually bashed out a 1000 word story for [livejournal.com profile] xf_is_love yesterday which completely took me by surprise. I had no idea that story was in me, but there it is! Keep an eye on that comm next month – a full month of The X-Files! Woo!

3. I’m also making this recipe this weekend because we have apples!
seren_ccd: (Audrey/Nathan - Haven)
[livejournal.com profile] redbrunja asked about being poly-fannish versus mono-fannish and sticking with one fandom.

Honestly, for me it comes down to two things: time and, to a lesser extent, Tumblr.

I actually have very limited time to be fannish. I had a job a few years back where I was the only person in the office and there wasn’t a big demand on my time and so I had buckets of time to write and read and participate. The last three years or so? Not so much. And what time I do have, I’m attempting to write something original or am only able to focus on one story at a time. *eyes several WIPs*

Therefore, when I do fall into a fandom, it’s pretty fast and furious and brief. I also think I somehow end up shipping the small, random pairings and hardly ever the main characters, which also limits my participation. I just dip my toe in and out and read what I can and write (if I have the time). For me to be involved and invested in a fandom, it helps if I can find what I like to read quickly and easily.

Which leads me to Tumblr. The way people interact with fandom has changed, as it always does, I’d like to point out! During the release of the Star Trek Reboot, there were dozens of LJ/DW comms dotted about for every kind of pairing and they were active! Remember the Ship War comm? Holy crap, that was so cool! It was cheerful and friendly and people were producing SO much stuff. You could find anything you wanted. We had our lovely McCoy/Chapel corner and oh, the fic. The lovely, lovely fic. It felt like there was more of an opportunity to interact with people and to easily consume the works being produced.

Not so much anymore. This is not to say that there aren’t still active comms (McCoy/Chapel Exchange 2014, woo!), but the majority of people have migrated to Tumblr and it’s harder to interact and share over there. As [livejournal.com profile] kasuchi put it, Tumblr is like being at a party and whispering while everyone else is talking. It doesn’t appeal to me. Tumblr doesn’t inspire me to create. It doesn’t even inspire me to consume. It makes me scroll. That’s the action it makes me do. The format of the site is just not conducive to reading and replying. (For me! This format works really well for others, this is just me talking.)

Now, I have my OTPs that I will always read (McCoy/Chapel, Darcy/Clint, Molly/Lestrade, 11/Amy, Mulder/Scully), but I find I’m not quite as fannish as I used to be, just because it’s hard to find things today. And due to my limited time, I’m not able to participate as much as I did and since I have such a lock on my days, I tend to skip from one fandom to the other.

I’m a busy butterfly is what I’m saying. :D

Things!

1. The lovely [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui asked me to chatter on about Almost Human and since it contains my movie boyfriend Karl Urban, I can so do this.

Almost Human!

I really thought this show had some serious potential. I love films like Blade Runner and I really think if this show had been given another season, it could have gone somewhere cool. The setting is FILLED with all sorts of things they could have done. Imagine every single Phillip K. Dick or Neal Stephenson story - it could have gone into this show. I just want my rain-soaked techno-neuromancer groove show, is that too much to ask?

I liked grumpy!jaded!cop!Karl and Dorian the Super Awesome Android. I've loved Lili Taylor since Mystic Pizza (showing my age again!) and to have her be the boss? Perfection!

Ugh, why cancel the shows with potential? *sulks* I liked having Karl on my telly on a weekly basis. SO disappointing.

2. Yuletide noms are open! Wooo!

3. I've discovered that I've somehow started writing my original thing in first person. It feels good. I'm...going to go for it and see what happens next.

Pics! Would you like pics? pretty people! )

Happy Monday! (If that's possible!) ♥
seren_ccd: (Writing is hard - Daisy from Spaced)
No, I don't know why that song is stuck in my head.

So! I was going to post once a week, wasn't I? Ahahahhhahahaha, um. Sorry. Life has been...extremely life-like.

Work! Work has been very busy, but I'm still really enjoying my new position. It's supposed to end in December, but I was told on Friday that they'll actually want me for at least another year. Woo!

Writing! Writing is...sort of happening? I'm doing a lot of writing by hand and am hoping to take advantage of a trip to Wales to closet myself at the National Library and type it all up.

Reading! I've been reading a lot of Molly/Sherlock fics these last two weeks and I. Don't. Know. Why. But. I am. Some of them are quite good. Some are not. Please don't judge me. I've also been reading a steampunk(ish) series by Kristen Callihan and it's quite good. All the supernatural elements that you imagine, plus some cool gadgets and it's very racy.

Eyes! I'm getting new frames for my glasses this week. Yay!

Foods! I'm making Kitchen-sink Curry tonight! This consists of throwing everything a part from the kitchen sink into a pot and letting it simmer. I'm getting rid of the kale that's about to go off, carrots, onions, garlic, ginger, mushrooms, peppers, coconut milk and some tomatoes. I think I've got a lime for garnish, which should be nice.

I hope everyone is doing all right and have a happy Sunday! ♥

Hi!

I’m going to do my best to start posting once a week again.

Things!

1. The new job is going really well. I like what I’m doing and it feels like a good fit. I had some very encouraging feedback on Friday and this may turn out to be more of a long-term post than temporary. Which is great! It’s nice working for an organisation that actually wants its employees to develop professionally.

2. Writing! I’m doing it? Bits and pieces, but I’m trying. I’m writing mostly by hand at the moment, which is working out for me. I’m filling up my new notebook rather quickly. My thoughts are just better geared to handwriting at the moment. We’ll see!

3. I wrote the ending of my original fic! Well, most of it. I need to write some of the rest, but it has been really helpful. I know where I need to get to. I figured out my villain/antagonist. I know what I want to have happen character development-wise and I think I set things up for the other books that will follow. Yay!

4. I’ve discovered Inspector Lewis. Laurence Fox is rather dishy, isn’t he? I could see him doing Lord Peter Wimsey in a few years when he’s in his 40s. Lucky Billie Piper!

5. I’m heading to Wales in September for a bit of a holiday. Le husband has to go to a conference in the town where my in-laws are and I’m tagging along to have a break. I have a list of things to look up at the National Library, so that’s going to be one of my days. The other days are going to spent wandering and talking and petting the wonderful family puppy.

Here is a wee collage of my favourite characters and an itty, bitty snippet.

faaaces and words! )

Happy Monday! ♥

Hullo!

How is everyone this weekend?

Not a whole lot to report. The new job is pretty cool. It's feels like a good fit for me and I'm just settling in and going for it.

I'm attempting to write a little every day and that feels quite good. I'm in the midst of another Musketeers fic with Constance and Athos set far in the future. Their voices are just really fun to write. I'm also writing the ending of one of my original fics to just get it out there. I'll need to fill in the middle, but I'm taking some writing advice to write the ending and then write to that. We'll see! :D

I just read ALL of Simone St James' novels and they were fantastic. Spooky and made me ready for autumn. I'm so ready for cooler weather. This summer stuff is not fun. Especially without air conditioner. Bleh.

I hope all is good with all of y'all! Happy Sunday! ♥

Hullo!

Wow! Hi! It's been a little while, hasn't it?

I started my new job and it's going well. It's very busy and I'm just trying to figure out what it's all about. It's mostly a lot of admin but I might be getting to assist a rather large county-wide project and that might be cool!

Sadly, we have the smallest desks in the world and the slowest internet access and everything is monitored, therefore very little fandom stuff gets to occur. I'm basically allowed two seconds to check my personal email. :P I also only have 30 minutes for lunch. :( Ah well. Once again, I have to figure out some time management because I really want to write but when I get the time to write, I'm exhausted. Argh.

And it's bloody hot down here! SO HOT! What is that strange bright orb in the sky that is sending light and heat down upon us all? Is it...the sun? Wow.

I also joined a gym! Hee! It turns out that I have about 40 minutes between the end of my work day and catching the train home and I need to get into better shape. So I joined this small gym that's right next door to my office. They're nice and they don't lock you into a contract and they pretty much leave you to it. I'm going to start off with just strict cardio and then actually do the machines. Sadly, their music selection is pretty crap and they play it really loud. (I just read that sentence and dear Lord, I'm old. Get off my lawn!)

Fandom-wise, I'm still digging From Dusk till Dawn and I still don't know how that happened. *facepalm* Although, I want to watch the Three Musketeers that aired on the BBC recently, so I might try that, too.

I hope everyone's doing all right! Happy Sunday! ♥
seren_ccd: (Miranda Get in!)
SO many things!

1. First off - I have a job! Eeeee! I had three interviews on Thurs and Friday and I was called with an offer on Friday afternoon. It's a grade higher than I've had before (same pay, sadly), but it's with the county council working in their social care operational support team. Woohooooo!

I think I might get offered another one - they specifically called me for an interview because they work with a lot of American ex-pats and well, I am an American ex-pat (although I don't really call myself that). Weird thing though, during the interview they asked if I was okay working some late nights here an there for events and possible trips to London. I said, sure, because I'm pretty flexible.

The guy then actually asked, 'So, you don't have children?'

Um. I didn't think you could ASK that question! I almost said, 'If I was a dude, would you be asking me this question?'

Very weird. The job sounds cool a part from that part, though. It's only maternity cover, whereas the other is permanent.

2. I saw the house we'll be sharing and it's really nice. Our room is pretty big and the kitchen is big enough for a couple of people to cook at the same time. We're surrounded by orchards! Free fruit!

3. I'm really enjoying From Dusk till Dawn: the series. Please watch this with me, y'all. I've already dragged [livejournal.com profile] fringedweller into it. Hot dudes in suits, vampires, South American myths, ladies being awesome, although there could be more ladies being awesome. It's kinda fun. There's also a kinkmeme.

4. I'm on my own whilst le husband is down south and I'm finishing off my notice at work. I've started the epic Life re-watch that I've been wanting to do for a couple of years now. Yays! [livejournal.com profile] aj, get ready for me to fling feels at you.

5. I don't really have a five, I'm just coasting with relief at the moment!

Have a lovely Sunday!!!! ♥

Hi! Wow! Things!

1. New job. Very excited. I’m still sad that I can’t stay where I am, but this is a really good move for me professionally. Apparently there will be a grand booze-up for me when I go; which sounds delightful!

2. I’m actually wearing a dress today. I hardly ever wear dresses but the weather is so nice, I just went for it. I’ve been told to wear this color (light blue) more often. :D

3. Every time I see someone on Tumblr saying that they have to wait soooo long for the next Game of Thrones novel or the next season of Sherlock, I’m very sympathetic.

Then I remember that I’ve been waiting since 1997 for the third novel in a trilogy to come out and my eye starts to twitch. 1997. Who the heck was Collan Rosvenir already? *whimpers*

Annnd, that’s all I got! Imma go make some foods and get caught up on The Glades. ♥
seren_ccd: (Writing is hard - Daisy from Spaced)
*Because everyone should have this song stuck in their head. You're welcome. :D

Things on a Sunday!

1. So, um, as of yesterday, I've written 9,230 words of my [livejournal.com profile] het_bigbang. *facepalm* I can't HELP it. It's just there and the words are just coming out. I started to feel really grumpy that this many words of fanfic were just pouring out of me compared to my original stuff. Then I realised that I've actually written quite a bit of my original stuff, I just ended up throwing half of it away.

2. It's really raining outside. I don't mind it. I prefer actual rain to the whole misty, drizzle thing. Whenever it does the misty thing, I always feel like shouting at the clouds: Look, just rain! Commit already!

3. I totes have grits on the boil. Oh yeah. Thank you, Mom!

4. It's laundry day and so I loaded up some towels and our duvet cover. I meant to pick mixed wash, but somehow picked the 90 degree setting. *eyes washing machine* I think it's okay. *edges away*

5. BY THE WAY! Don't forget to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] het_bigbang if you feel like it! They want writers, artists, betas and cheerleaders. It's seriously one of my favorite comms out there and is always just plain fun. Don't forget! Original fic is welcome this year, too!

Here is a collage of these two morons and a tiny, wee snippet. who you gonna call? )

Happy Sunday! ♥

Things!

1. Welp. I’m definitely doing the [livejournal.com profile] het_bigbang with Emma Grayling and Alec Palmer. It’s kind of a novel experience – working with characters that have actually appeared on screen with each other. :P However, I’m going to do my best to do like for like. If I write 1000 words of fic, then I need to write 1000 words of novel. We’ll see how it all goes…

But the real, honest truth is?

I need something fun and low-key/pressure in my life. I really, really do. And Het BB is that for me. So. Yes. I’m going to do this.

Btw, with the way I’m writing this? You will NOT need to know anything about Doctor Who. Seriously. This is my modern(ish) gothic romance story a la Mary Stewart.

2. I saw Iron Man 3!!!! No spoilers, I promise (unless you’d like me to, feel free to PM me for details). I’ll just say that the first movie continues to hold a very special place in my heart, but this one was definitely entertaining.

3. Work is nuts. I’m so busy. And they’re still thinking of getting rid of my post. *rolls eyes* I’m picking up work from a lot of different people now. One lady (who’s just lovely) has asked me to do something for her and in thanks – she got me a slice of cake from the nearby café! ♥

4. I’m doing a Pedometer Challenge at work, too. Apparently, you should average 10,000 steps a day. I’m almost managing that every other day. I need to step up my game. Pun wasn’t actually intended.

5. Ooh! It's Wednesday! Have some pics of the two faces that are currently plaguing my writing brain. faaaces )

Happy Wednesday!

My Weekend To Do List:

~Watch The Ghost and Mrs Muir
~Do a ‘monkey brain' exercise with Nora and possibly Captain Alec, but I kinda know him already, Nora’s the one I’m wibbly on
~Type up what I’ve handwritten so far
~Clean the kitchen
~Make stew and dumplings (Sunday)

I think I can do all that.

And since it’s Friday, have a picture of Karl Urban doing the Vulcan salute.

Happy Friday!

1. There's no Once Upon a Time tomorrow because of the Oscars? What? WHY? Does anyone care about the Oscars anymore? I mean really. I love the dresses, I'll be honest, but the rest? Pbbt. I need to know what happens to Belle.

2. I'm making chocolate chip cookies. Because I can.

3. I am caught up on NCIS: LA. Kensi is awesome. AWESOME. She MUST continue to be so.

4. I'm debating buying Hamish MacBeth from amazon. It's only 14 quid for all three seasons. I've only seen snippets of the episodes. Should I invest in the whole thing?

5. Right. What the heck is Rumpelstiltskin's name when he's at home? Or do people just avoid saying his name in casual conversation? If you shortened it, what would it be? Rum? Rumpel? Stil? Skin? WHAT? Things are things I need to know because of reasons.

And in Storybrooke? Is is just Mr. Gold? Therefore, would it be Gold?

Well, back to cookies and writing. :D

Happy Saturday! ♥

Stuff What is Good.

1. I had a dream with Joel McHale in it! We were at a Mexican restaurant. There were burritos! Three of my favorite things in ONE DREAM: Joel McHale, Mexican restaurants and burritos!

Thus concludes my Liz Lemon moment of the day.

2. I'm writing the next in the Teeth, Claws and Guinness series and get to spend some time in the head of a Glenling (aka a Wee Free Man) which is kind of delightful.

3. I'm PMS-ing like a mad woman. This isn't a good thing per se, but realizing that PMS is the reason I keep getting irritable and glaring at random people is a good thing. I've already warned my husband and he's being ultra-nice and slightly wary.

4. I had a pink lady apple today with lunch and it was wonderfully crispy!

5. More fake tv shows! Look it!

[livejournal.com profile] shirleyann66's A Life Less Ordinary. It's got Karl Urban and Megan Follows in it and Karl gets to keep his accent! ALSO, she's doing this for ScriptFrenzy! Send lots of encouragement her way and hope she lets us see the finished product!

[livejournal.com profile] charliehey's Modern Charity. C'est tres magnifique et plus de plaisir physique!

[livejournal.com profile] robanybody's Desk Jockeys. Y'all, Grace Park and Joel McHale make out and Jamie Bell has a little minion hat.

And [livejournal.com profile] robanybody gave me some more actors/actresses that are some of the BAMFiest BAMFs that ever BAMFed. I'm thinking a newsroom ala Drop the Dead Donkey.

And if you missed the previous ones:

[livejournal.com profile] aj's Red Skies Damien Lewis and Sarah Shahi , you guys. They're on a boat.

[livejournal.com profile] jal80's The Quatermain Society Archaeology and smexiness. Mmmm.

[livejournal.com profile] halfpenny_press's Conductor: The Age of Steel STEAMPUNK and PERSONAL MACHINATIONS.

(mine are here)

Annd, oh heck why not, have some pictures! )
